Haven – Film

Synopsis

After a lifelong battle with addiction, 43-year-old Haven Johnson finds sobriety – and with it, something unexpected: trail running.
With no previous running experience, she turns to the Squamish trails in search of stability, purpose, and a reason to believe in herself again.

This short film traces Haven’s two-year journey from her tentative first jog to completing the gruelling Squamish 50km Ultra.

Along the way, Haven discovers a trail-running community that lifts her up and pushes her forward, refusing to let her journey be a solitary one.

This is a story of resilience and the power of community that keeps showing up.

Director’s Statement

In a world that idolizes professional athletes – stories of everyday people matter. Starting something new in your 40s – especially as a woman – can be daunting, but Haven proves that trail running truly is for everyone.

I met Haven during a social trail run in Squamish, BC, and our friendship allowed me intimate access to Haven’s journey. Seeing what Haven has overcome, and how the running community has embraced her, inspires me. These trails are tough, and going from a newbie trail runner – to completing a 50km ultra in just two years – is extraordinary. Haven is quirky, full of energy, and always the first person to reach out to offer others her support.

This film celebrates Haven’s step-by-step movement away from addiction, her optimism, and the way she champions new runners. My aim is to show the transformative power of trail running – how important community is to rehabilitation and how women continue to do hard things.
